Barceló Palace Hotel, Buxton, Wedding Photography

Situated in the glorious Peak District National Park, in the heart of the spa town of Buxton is the Barceló Buxton Palace Hotel. Set in 5 acres of grounds this grand, Victorian Regency style hotel offers a truly romantic, picturesque setting to celebrate your special day. Whatever type of day you’re looking for, whether it’s a fairytale wedding with a lavish reception, an intimate celebration with your closest friends and family, or a civil partnership or commitment ceremony, they can help you to create the perfect day.

It was during the busy run up to Christmas that Scott and Hugh held their Civil Partnership wedding at the Barcelo Palace Hotel in Buxton.  We have photographed a lot of weddings at the Palace, but it was a particular honour to be invited to Hugh and Scott’s celebration in December.  It would be remiss not to mention Hugh and Scott’s dog Smurf, who played an important part during the ceremony as ring bearer.

Scott and Hugh asked their respective Mums to be witnesses. As for Smurf? – couldn’t leave him out.

After the ceremony we piled into the car and took a quick run down to the Pavilion Gardens for shots with just the guys. The first few are in the heated conservatory.

Followed by a stroll around the decidedly unheated Pavvy Gardens. Bang on cue, it started snowing while we taking these images.

Dinner time and time for us to leave the guys and their guests to enjoy the rest of their celebrations.

We do a lot of weddings at the Palace Hotel in Buxton. It is one of our local “gigs”. However it amazes me how different and varied the photographs come out from one wedding to another. Gen and Patrick put their own totally unique stamp on their wedding and it made photographing their special day a real joy for us. They share a quite “unique” sense of fun, and their love for each other shines through and is quite evident in the photographs I think.

For reasons too lengthy to explain here, we were asked to photograph only the evening celebrations at Lisa and Mike’s wedding. The reception was at the Palace Hotel, Buxton in Derbyshire in the “Peak” Room. The Peak Room is a huge (dark) cavernous ballroom, used for larger weddings. For wedding photography it is a “challenge”, because with the rooms lights dimmed, almost the only light available for photography is the light from our flash heads, and we have to make it go a long way.

Techie note: For the speeches we set up a “room light” the purpose of which is to raise the background level of light in the whole room. This was supplemented by a second flash from near the camera position. The flash heads are triggered by radio. The camera exposure is set manually, as is the focus because the autofocus does not work well in low light conditions. For the silhouette shots it is simply a matter of turning off the flash trigger and exposing for the projector image.

Techie note: A different setup was used for the first dance. There is usually plenty of time to set lights up before the first dance, and I quite often set up flashes on stands or on the DJ’s speakers, so they fire from behind the couple giving pretty “rim” lighting.  A third flash can be used to add light from the front, but I often run with just two.
