The wedding ”season” gets underway this weekend with Molly and Mike’s wedding at Hollin Hall, so we took the opportunity to fit in a holiday before we get really busy on the beautiful sunny island of Madeira. I don’t like to take my wedding cameras on holiday – they are just to heavy and bulky to carry around – so all the images below were taken on the humble Canon G9, which is getting a little long in the tooth now. But it’s still a great little camera and fits in the pocket, so it does nicely.

Madeira is a small(ish) island located in the Atlantic, off the north coast of Africa and north of the Canary Islands. It is mountainous in character, its landscape steep and rugged, and evidence of volcanic activity is everwhere. Much of the coastal area of the island is given over to arable farming, using small medieval style farming plots arranged on terraces. The crops rely on an ancient irrigation system whereby water is efficiently channeled from the mountain tops via small canals called ‘lavadas’. The lavadas have access paths running along them and it is possible to walk them – often in beautiful wooded mountain scenery.

Last friday I got a call asking if I would go and take some shots of the Devonshire Dome in Buxton, which had been set up for a party for the Chatsworth Estate.
The floor of the Dome was set up for 630 seated guests, leaving just enough room for the dance floor. Even the balcony had been set up with tables and chairs making room for a further 140 guests.
We have photographed weddings at the Dome on numerous occasions, and it always looks good, but set up for 770 people it really did look awesome. They had the coloured split lights to illuminate the floor in one colour and the roof in another.
And here it is in full flow, with lights and all at Kat and Mike’s wedding last year:

We are very thrilled to have won a Gold Award in the IPPN January photo competition for this image from Iz and Jon’s wedding last year.

To be truthful there is a large amount of luck in capturing reportage images like this one. In this case I had taken a similar picture at a previous wedding, so I knew the girls were going to come down the stairs and appear in the mirror. What I didn’t know was that Dad would come out of the door at precisely the right moment and transform the shot from the ordinary.
